Vive Le Fringe
Overview
Vive Le Fringe is a French arts event that takes place during Edinburgh's Fringe festival. During Spring 2023, I had the opportunity to submit designs for the events posters and branding. These designs were shown in the Edinburgh Napier University student showcase in August 2023.

Two poster iterations were created for the competition. I wanted to convey an aspect of French culture while paying homage to French artists. However, I did not want to base my poster off of basic French stereotypes After interviewing some of the fresh exchange students at the university, I discovered a lesser-known fact about France is that the Rooster is the national bird of the country. I chose the animal as the primary theme for my compositions.

The first poster is meant to be a more serious take on the subject. It combines the piece "Cocorico" by Swiss-French artist Théophile Alexandre Steinlen. The collaged elements of the piece are made to represent the rebellious, homemade aspects of the Fringe festival as well as the collision of Scottish and French culture. Colors and text placement were altered for the final version to improve visual contrast and readability.
The second, more comedic take on the idea is based off the work of the French artist Kévin Gemin (known online as Kékéflipnote). I took inspiration from Germin's style in the formation of abstract birds, a theme of Germin's work. An advantage of the birds is that they could easily be given simple accessories to grant character, and they could be used as branding element for other Fringe materials. The original design featured purple and yellow, a favorite color combination of mine, but I was encouraged by my professors to change to red, white, and blue. The new palette better conveyed the national aspect of France.
